Description
A masterpiece of Spanish Baroque painting, this work depicts a miraculous event in a Carthusian refectory with characteristic clarity and stillness.
Francisco de Zurbarán painted this work for the Carthusian monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville. It depicts a legendary event where St. Hugh of Cluny, visiting the monastery, observes the monks dining on meat, which was forbidden by their order. The painting captures the moment the monks, through divine intervention, see the meat miraculously transformed into ashes. The composition is defined by a stark, horizontal arrangement of figures seated behind a long table covered in a white cloth. Zurbarán employs a restrained palette, focusing on the heavy, sculptural folds of the white habits worn by the Carthusian monks. The lighting is precise and directional, casting soft shadows that define the volume of the figures and the simple objects on the table. A small boy stands in the foreground, his back to the viewer, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the solemn environment. Above the monks, a framed painting within the painting depicts the Virgin and Child alongside John the Baptist. This inclusion adds a layer of spiritual context to the scene. Zurbarán is known for his ability to render textures with great clarity, from the coarse fabric of the robes to the ceramic vessels on the table. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, favouring a quiet, meditative atmosphere that aligns with the ascetic nature of the Carthusian order. The spatial depth is managed through the placement of the table and the figures, creating a clear, orderly progression that directs the eye across the canvas. This piece remains a primary example of the artist's capacity to combine naturalistic observation with religious narrative, maintaining a sense of stillness that characterises much of his output during this period.
