A characteristic maritime scene by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, depicting the harbour town of St Ives with his signature intuitive perspective and raw, direct style.
Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties. He lacked formal training, yet his work gained recognition from members of the St Ives modernist circle, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. Wallis typically painted on salvaged materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, using limited household paints. His approach to perspective is intuitive rather than academic. He prioritised the relative importance of objects over their physical distance from the viewer, a technique often described as mapping or memory-based representation.
In this depiction of St Ives, the harbour and town are rendered with a direct, unadorned quality. The white-washed cottages are clustered together, their forms simplified into geometric blocks. The sea is represented by deep, textured blue strokes that wrap around the land, creating a sense of enclosure. Wallis often omitted the horizon line, allowing the water to function as a frame for the buildings. The composition reflects his deep familiarity with the topography of the Cornish coast, captured not through observation from a fixed point, but through the accumulation of years spent navigating these waters. The use of cardboard as a support is evident in the texture of the work, which adds a tactile quality to the painted surface. His work remains a distinct example of British folk art, valued for its honesty and the absence of conventional artistic affectation.
