St. James the Great and St. Clare - Rogier van der Weyden

This work represents a section of the exterior wings from a larger altarpiece, executed in the grisaille technique. Rogier van der Weyden, a master of the Early Netherlandish school, employs a monochromatic palette to simulate the appearance of stone sculpture. This stylistic choice was common in the period, intended to create a visual bridge between the painted world and the physical architecture of the church.

On the left, St. James the Great is depicted with his traditional attributes, including a staff and a broad-brimmed hat. He stands within a shallow, arched niche, his heavy robes rendered with precise attention to the weight and fall of the fabric. To the right, St. Clare of Assisi is shown holding a monstrance, her habit draped in a manner that suggests volume and form. The artist uses light and shadow to define the figures, creating a sense of three-dimensional presence despite the absence of colour.

The figures are placed within architectural frames that mimic the stone carvings of the era. The illusionistic quality is achieved through careful modelling of the drapery and the subtle gradation of tones from cream to deep sepia.
