A dramatic Baroque painting by Jusepe de Ribera, depicting St. Jerome startled by the sound of the last trumpet. The work features strong contrasts of light and shadow, typical of Ribera's tenebrist style.
Jusepe de Ribera, a leading painter and printmaker of the Spanish Baroque period, created this dramatic depiction of St. Jerome. Born in Spain but active primarily in Naples, Ribera was known for his tenebrist style, characterised by strong contrasts of light and shadow. This approach heightens the emotional intensity of his religious and mythological scenes. He drew influence from Caravaggio and the Italian masters. In this painting, St. Jerome is shown as an aged, partially nude figure, startled by the sound of the last trumpet. An angel hovers above, sounding the alarm. Jerome, a Doctor of the Church and translator of the Bible into Latin, is often depicted with symbols of scholarship, such as books and scrolls, and emblems of mortality, such as skulls. Here, he is caught in a moment of divine revelation, his body twisted in reaction to the heavenly sound. The composition is dominated by dark tones, with a spotlight effect on Jerome's body and the angel, typical of Ribera's dramatic style. A lion, another of Jerome's attributes, is dimly visible in the background.
