A detailed reproduction of an illuminated manuscript folio by the Limbourg brothers, featuring St. Paul the Hermit within a decorative floral border.
This illumination originates from the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, a manuscript commissioned by Jean, Duke of Berry, and executed by the Limbourg brothers. The scene depicts a narrative episode involving St. Paul the Hermit, rendered with the precise detail characteristic of early fifteenth-century Franco-Flemish book production.
The composition is framed by an elaborate border of acanthus leaves and floral motifs, typical of the International Gothic style. Within the central panel, the figures are arranged in a shallow, stage-like space. The artist employs a decorative approach to the background, using a patterned textile-like grid that flattens the perspective. The figures wear garments with soft, flowing folds, reflecting the courtly fashion of the period. The colour palette relies on primary pigments, including vermilion, ultramarine, and gold leaf, which maintain their clarity on the vellum surface.
The Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, were active in the service of the Duke of Berry. Their work represents a transition in European art, where the rigid conventions of earlier medieval periods began to incorporate more naturalistic observation of human anatomy and spatial depth. This specific folio demonstrates their ability to balance narrative clarity with the ornamental requirements of a devotional book. The script below the image provides the liturgical context, integrating the text into the overall visual design of the page. This print captures the fine line work and the specific pigment application of the original manuscript, offering a view into the technical mastery of late medieval book arts.
