This composition by El Greco depicts the two apostles, Peter and Paul, in a moment of quiet interaction. Peter, positioned on the left, wears a muted, earthy cloak and holds the keys to the kingdom. Paul, on the right, is draped in a striking orange mantle, his hand resting upon an open book. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive, fluid brushwork characteristic of the artist's mature period in Toledo.

El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, moved from Crete to Italy before settling in Spain. His work departs from the balanced naturalism of the High Renaissance, favouring instead a subjective, spiritualised approach to form and light. The figures here occupy a shallow, ambiguous space, their presence defined by the dramatic interplay of shadow and light across their garments. The colour palette is dominated by deep ochres, browns, and a singular, intense orange that draws the eye to Paul's gesture.

This painting reflects the Counter-Reformation climate of the late sixteenth century, where religious art aimed to evoke emotional and spiritual engagement. The apostles are not presented as static icons but as individuals engaged in a theological dialogue. The focus remains on their expressive faces and hands, which convey a sense of weight and purpose.
