A precise academic figure study in chalk by Jean Grandjean, depicting a male model in a classical pose.
This academic figure study by Jean Grandjean, dated 1780, demonstrates the rigorous training typical of late eighteenth-century European art academies. The work depicts a male model in a frontal pose, his right arm raised to his head while a piece of fabric is draped behind his back. Grandjean employs black and white chalk on grey paper to achieve a sculptural quality, using the mid-tone of the paper to balance the shadows and highlights.
The artist focuses on anatomical precision, carefully rendering the musculature of the torso and limbs. The use of white chalk provides volume to the chest and shoulders, while the darker strokes define the contours and the subtle folds of the cloth. Such drawings were standard exercises for students, intended to develop a mastery of the human form before progressing to complex historical compositions. The pose is reminiscent of classical statuary, reflecting the period's interest in the antique.
Grandjean, a Dutch artist who spent time in Rome, was deeply influenced by the classical tradition. His technique here is disciplined and methodical, prioritising clarity of line and form. The drawing serves as an example of the academic practice of the time, where the study of the nude was the primary method for learning to represent the human body with accuracy and grace. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre of the page, allowing the viewer to observe the artist's attention to anatomical detail and light. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the delicate application of the chalk, offering a clear view of the artist's process.
