A detailed etching by Charles-François Daubigny, capturing a quiet moment of stags resting by a riverbank in the French countryside.
Charles-François Daubigny was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This etching captures a quiet, rural scene, typical of the artist's fascination with the riverbanks of the Oise. Daubigny often travelled on his studio boat, the Botin, which allowed him to observe the shifting light and atmosphere of the French countryside from the water level.
The composition is defined by a dense screen of trees that frame the river. The verticality of the poplars contrasts with the horizontal expanse of the water, creating a sense of stillness. Two stags appear as small, secondary elements within the foliage, suggesting the presence of wildlife in this secluded environment. The artist employs varied hatching techniques to build texture and depth, particularly in the reflection of the trees upon the water surface and the shadowed bank.
Daubigny was a prolific printmaker, and his work in etching helped to revitalise the medium during the nineteenth century. He moved away from the highly finished, academic style of his contemporaries, preferring a more spontaneous approach that captured the immediate impression of a scene. The lines here are precise yet fluid, demonstrating his technical control over the copper plate. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, he conveys the damp, cool atmosphere of a forest edge at dawn or dusk. This print offers a glimpse into the quiet, observational practice that informed his larger oil paintings, showing his ability to find beauty in the modest details of the natural world.
