Description
Stamford lifts Lincolnshire's stone roofs and church towers beyond green pasture, where a grazing sheep and leafy borders connect the historic Welland town to its surrounding countryside.
On the Welland in south-west Lincolnshire, Stamford developed at a ford used by the Roman Ermine Street. Prosperity from wool and later stagecoach travel helped shape its streets, where mellow limestone buildings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries stand alongside older timber-framed houses.
Across an open pasture, a narrow spire rises above pale roofs and a smaller square church tower. Dense green trees almost conceal the lower town. One sheep grazes in the sunlit foreground, with white flowers beside a low stone boundary. Full foliage suggests summer warmth, while the generous blue sky leaves the varied skyline clearly outlined beyond the shaded field edge.
