A study of a peasant woman by Dutch Golden Age artist Cornelis Dusart, rendered in ink and watercolour.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, maintained the tradition of depicting the daily lives of the Dutch peasantry. This study captures a figure in a moment of stillness, rendered with the characteristic attention to costume and posture found in his broader body of work. The subject is viewed from a three-quarter rear angle, a perspective that allows the artist to focus on the heavy folds of the skirt and the simple, functional nature of the clothing.
The application of watercolour over ink outlines provides a sense of volume to the figure. Dusart uses a muted palette of earthy browns, greys, and soft ochres, which aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the late seventeenth-century Dutch school. The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, a common accessory for rural workers of the period, which casts a subtle shadow over the upper portion of the form. The simplicity of the composition suggests this was likely a preparatory sketch or a character study intended for inclusion in a larger genre scene.
Unlike the more polished oil paintings of the era, this work retains the immediacy of the artist's hand. The ink lines are precise, defining the silhouette against the plain background. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. Dusart was known for his interest in the lower classes, often portraying them with a degree of empathy and observational rigour. This print captures that specific interest, offering a glimpse into the social fabric of the Dutch Republic. It is a quiet, unassuming piece that rewards close inspection of the brushwork and the subtle layering of pigment.
