A refined red chalk study of Saint Cecilia by the Italian Renaissance master Garofalo, showcasing his mastery of form and delicate line work.
This study in red chalk depicts Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, rendered with the characteristic grace of the Ferrarese High Renaissance. Garofalo, born Benvenuto Tisi, was heavily influenced by the Roman school, particularly the work of Raphael. This influence is visible in the gentle contrapposto of the figure and the soft, rounded modelling of the facial features. The saint is shown in a standing pose, holding a blank tablet or musical score, her gaze directed slightly upwards in a gesture of contemplation.
The use of red chalk, or sanguine, allows for a delicate range of tonal values. Garofalo employs fine, parallel hatching to define the folds of the drapery and the volume of the figure, creating a sense of weight and presence despite the economy of the medium. The lines are precise yet fluid, demonstrating the artist's technical control. The figure's attire is rendered with attention to the texture of the fabric, with subtle variations in pressure creating depth within the shadows.
Such drawings were often preparatory works for larger altarpieces or frescoes. They provide a view into the artist's creative process, showing how a composition was constructed before the application of paint. The figure of Saint Cecilia appears in several of Garofalo's religious commissions, where he often integrated classical ideals with the specific devotional requirements of his patrons. This print captures the tactile quality of the original paper and the warmth of the red chalk, offering a clear view of the draughtsmanship that defined the period. It is a study of form and expression, reflecting the aesthetic priorities of the early sixteenth century in Italy.
