A classical allegorical study by Pieter van Lint, featuring a standing female figure with a staff and globe, rendered in pen, ink, and wash.
This drawing by the Flemish artist Pieter van Lint depicts a female figure, likely an allegory of wisdom or victory, standing in a contrapposto pose. She holds a tall staff in her left hand and supports a small, winged figure atop a globe in her right. The composition is structured to resemble a classical statue set within a niche, a common device in seventeenth-century European art to suggest architectural integration. The figure wears a helmet with wings, reminiscent of traditional depictions of Minerva or Roma, and is dressed in classical drapery that falls in heavy, rhythmic folds.
Van Lint, who spent a significant period in Rome during the 1630s, absorbed the influence of the Italian Baroque. This study reflects his training in the classical tradition, where the focus remains on anatomical clarity and the balanced distribution of weight. The use of brown ink and grey wash allows the artist to model the form with precision, creating a sense of volume that suggests the figure is carved from stone. The hatching lines are deliberate, defining the contours of the limbs and the texture of the fabric without unnecessary ornamentation. The inclusion of the small figure on the globe adds a layer of narrative complexity, typical of the allegorical subjects favoured by artists of the period for decorative commissions or preparatory designs for larger paintings.
This work provides insight into the working methods of a Flemish master operating within the international style of the mid-seventeenth century. The drawing is executed with a focus on structural integrity, reflecting the academic rigour of the time. The muted palette, achieved through the application of wash over chalk, keeps the viewer's attention on the form and the symbolic elements of the staff and globe.
