A delicate nineteenth-century botanical watercolour study of a blue Star Flower by American artist Mary Altha Nims.
Mary Altha Nims produced this botanical study with a focus on clarity and observation. The work depicts a single specimen, identified by the artist as a Star Flower, positioned against a plain, off-white background. The composition is straightforward, prioritising the anatomical features of the plant over atmospheric effects or complex staging.
The flower itself features six petals rendered in shades of blue, with subtle striations indicating the texture of the organic form. At the centre, a circular arrangement of yellow and brown tones provides a contrast to the cooler petals. The stem curves gently, supporting a series of dark green leaves. These leaves are marked with fine, dark lines that suggest the vein structure of the foliage. The artist employs a controlled application of watercolour, allowing for a degree of transparency in the petals while building up deeper, more saturated tones in the leaves.
This piece reflects the tradition of amateur botanical art common in the nineteenth century, where the documentation of flora served both as a scientific exercise and a creative pursuit. The artist has inscribed the title in the lower right corner in a cursive hand, which remains a characteristic feature of the work. The lack of background detail ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the botanical structure. This print captures the precision of the original watercolour, maintaining the balance between the delicate blue of the bloom and the grounded, darker tones of the leaves. It is a study in simplicity, offering a clear view of the plant's form without unnecessary embellishment.
