A woodblock print by Ohara Koson, 'Starlings and Cherry Tree' depicts two birds perched on a branch with red berries. The print exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the delicate beauty of nature.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-Hanga movement. This artistic period, active from around 1915 to 1940s, aimed to revitalise traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing, incorporating Western influences while maintaining Japanese artistic conventions. Koson is particularly known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e). He initially trained in painting, but later shifted to woodblock print design. His works were popular both in Japan and abroad. 'Starlings and Cherry Tree' exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the delicate beauty of nature. The print features two starlings perched on a slender branch of a cherry tree, adorned with bright red berries. The birds are rendered with careful attention to detail, their plumage subtly shaded. The composition is simple yet elegant, with the branch extending diagonally across the frame against a soft, gradated background. The overall effect is one of serene observation, characteristic of Japanese art traditions.
