A classic Dutch Golden Age still life by Jan Davidsz de Heem, featuring a detailed arrangement of luxury goods and fruit.
Jan Davidsz de Heem was a master of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly recognised for his ability to render textures and light within the genre of still life painting. This work, dating to approximately 1642, displays the characteristic opulence associated with the pronkstilleven, or ostentatious still life, which became popular among the Dutch merchant class during the seventeenth century.
The composition features a variety of luxury goods arranged upon a table draped in cloth. A prominent lobster, rendered in shades of red, sits alongside silver vessels, a gilded cup, and a basket of fruit. De Heem employs a dark, moody background to push the objects forward, allowing the light to catch the metallic surfaces and the translucent skin of the grapes. The inclusion of a chair in the foreground adds a sense of physical space, inviting the viewer to imagine the scene as a momentary pause in a larger feast.
Beyond the display of wealth, the painting contains elements common to the vanitas tradition. The presence of a sundial and the half-peeled lemon suggest the passage of time and the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures. De Heem balances these moralising undertones with a technical precision that captures the physical reality of each object. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the distinct qualities of metal, fabric, and organic matter. This print reproduces the depth of the original oil painting, maintaining the contrast between the shadowed corners and the illuminated centre of the composition.
