A bold Expressionist still life by Alexej von Jawlensky, featuring saturated colours and heavy, expressive brushwork.
This work by Alexej von Jawlensky displays the characteristic intensity of his early twentieth-century output. During this period, Jawlensky moved away from the naturalistic representation of objects, choosing instead to prioritise the emotional weight of colour and the structural integrity of the composition. The painting features a collection of fruit and vessels arranged against a background dominated by a raw, saturated red.
Jawlensky applies paint with a heavy, deliberate hand. The brushwork is visible and energetic, creating a tactile surface that rejects smooth finish in favour of raw expression. The objects, including the blue jug and the pink-toned vase, are reduced to their essential forms. Their outlines are reinforced with dark, heavy strokes, which separate them from the surrounding space. This technique reflects the influence of the Fauvist movement, where colour functions independently of the actual appearance of the subject matter.
The palette is deliberately constructed to create a visual tension. The cool blue of the jug provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding red field, while the green leaves and fruit introduce further chromatic variation. Jawlensky does not seek to capture the play of light or the texture of the fruit in a traditional sense. Instead, he uses these elements as a vehicle for a subjective experience of form. The composition is compact and grounded, with the objects clustered together to create a sense of weight and presence. This approach to the still life genre demonstrates the artist's interest in the spiritual and psychological potential of painting, a theme that would occupy him throughout his career. The work remains a clear example of the transition toward abstraction within the German Expressionist circle, where the artist's internal vision takes precedence over external reality.
