A 1950 oil painting by Werner Heldt, featuring a domestic still life set against a geometric, urban Berlin backdrop.
Werner Heldt, a painter associated with the Berlin art scene, produced this work in 1950. The composition presents a domestic interior scene juxtaposed against an urban backdrop. A striped tablecloth provides the surface for a collection of objects, including a prominent black pitcher and a framed picture. These items are rendered with bold, simplified forms and thick outlines, a stylistic choice that flattens the pictorial space.
Beyond the balcony railing, the city appears as a series of vertical blocks. Heldt employs a restricted yet deliberate palette, using muted tones alongside blocks of pink, blue, and yellow to define the architecture. The inclusion of a silhouette profile on one of the buildings adds a surreal, graphic quality to the urban environment. This work reflects Heldt's preoccupation with the city of Berlin, which he often depicted as a fragmented, claustrophobic, yet strangely ordered space during the post-war period.
The painting avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a decorative arrangement of shapes. The contrast between the intimate, personal objects on the table and the impersonal, rigid structures of the city creates a sense of detachment. Heldt's approach to form is reductive, focusing on the essential geometry of his subjects rather than their realistic textures. This piece serves as an example of his ability to synthesise the external reality of a ruined city with the internal, quiet nature of a still life. The work remains a clear representation of the artist's mid-century aesthetic, where the boundary between the private home and the public street is blurred through colour and line.
