A still life woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai featuring cherry blossoms, a telescope, fish, and a tissue case. The print showcases the artist's skill in composition and his attention to detail.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) presents an intriguing still life composition. Hokusai, a Japanese artist best known for his woodblock print series *Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji*, including the iconic *Great Wave off Kanagawa*, also produced a variety of other works, including still life studies. This print, executed in the *ukiyo-e* style, features a collection of objects arranged on a neutral surface. The composition includes double cherry-blossom branches, a telescope, sweet fish, and a tissue case. The telescope, adorned with a decorative pattern, lies horizontally across the image, while the fish are positioned near the blossoms. The tissue case sits to the side, adding another layer of domesticity to the scene. Calligraphic inscriptions are present above the objects, likely adding context or poetic commentary to the arrangement. The colour palette is restrained, with soft pinks, greens, and browns dominating the scene, typical of Japanese woodblock prints of the period. The print offers a glimpse into the material culture and aesthetic sensibilities of 19th-century Japan.
