Description
A classic 1910 still life by Henri Matisse, featuring a pewter jug and a pink statuette rendered in bold, expressive colours.
Painted in 1910, this work captures the characteristic approach of Henri Matisse to the still life genre. The composition is anchored by a large, reflective pewter jug positioned on the left, which contrasts with the reclining pink statuette placed centrally on the table. Matisse employs a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette, using a deep, saturated red for the tabletop that pushes against the cool, flat blue of the background wall. This spatial tension is a hallmark of his work during this period, where he prioritised the decorative arrangement of shapes and colours over traditional perspective.
The objects are rendered with simplified forms and strong outlines, typical of his rejection of academic realism. The pewter jug displays a range of violet and blue tones, suggesting the play of light on its metallic surface without resorting to conventional shading. Beside the statuette, small decorative elements, including a piece of fruit and a smaller vessel, provide balance to the composition. The table itself is depicted with a simplified, almost schematic quality, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the objects and the surrounding space.
Matisse often returned to the same collection of studio props, including this specific statuette, which appears in several of his paintings from this era. By repeating these items, he explored how different arrangements and colour relationships could alter the viewer's perception of the same subject matter. The work is an example of his ability to synthesise observation with a subjective, expressive use of colour. The flat, vertical background serves to compress the pictorial space, ensuring that the focus remains on the arrangement of the objects on the table surface. This print captures the texture of the original paint application and the intensity of the colour choices, providing a clear view of the artist's method.
