Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin occupies a unique position in eighteenth-century French painting. While his contemporaries favoured the ornate and the mythological, Chardin turned his attention to the quiet dignity of domestic objects. This composition, dating from 1763, demonstrates his mastery of light and texture. The central brioche, topped with a sprig of orange blossom, sits upon a simple surface. To the left, a porcelain sugar bowl with a floral lid provides a delicate contrast to the weight of the bread. To the right, a glass bottle containing a deep red liquid catches the light, its transparency rendered with characteristic precision.

Chardin applied paint with a deliberate, tactile quality. He built up layers of pigment to suggest the crust of the bread, the smooth surface of the porcelain, and the reflective nature of the glass.
