Juan Gris
A classic example of Synthetic Cubism by Juan Gris, featuring a geometric arrangement of domestic objects and a distinctive checked tablecloth.
Juan Gris, a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism, produced this work in 1915. The composition demonstrates his methodical approach to the movement, which prioritised the construction of a picture through geometric planes rather than the fragmentation typical of earlier Analytic Cubism. Gris organises the objects on the table into a coherent, overlapping structure where the boundaries between the foreground and background become fluid. The painting features a prominent green and white checked tablecloth, which provides a rigid grid that contrasts with the curved forms of the grapes and the bottle. Gris incorporates everyday items, such as a newspaper labelled 'Le Journal' and a bottle, to ground the abstract arrangement in reality. His use of colour is deliberate and controlled, relying on a palette of greens, browns, and blacks to define the spatial relationships between the objects. The light sources appear multiple and inconsistent, a common technique in his work to flatten the pictorial space and force the viewer to engage with the painting as a constructed object. Unlike his contemporaries who often obscured their subjects, Gris maintained a clear legibility in his still lifes. He applied paint with precision, avoiding the gestural brushwork found in the works of other Cubists. This piece reflects his interest in mathematical order and the architectural potential of the canvas. The inclusion of the newspaper, a frequent motif in the period, links the work to the urban environment of Paris, where Gris lived and worked. The result is a balanced, intellectualised interpretation of domestic objects that remains one of the most recognisable examples of his mature style.
