A classic Dutch Golden Age still life by Harmen Steenwijck, featuring a detailed arrangement of fish, fruit, and an earthenware jar.
Harmen Steenwijck, a painter from Delft, produced this work during the Dutch Golden Age. The composition follows the conventions of the period, focusing on the arrangement of everyday objects upon a wooden table. The central element is a speckled earthenware jar, flanked by a plate of fish and various fruits, including peaches and blackberries. A small butterfly rests on a leaf to the right, while a caterpillar crawls across a peach, adding a sense of transience to the scene.
The lighting is directional, entering from the upper left to illuminate the textures of the fish scales, the porous surface of the jar, and the soft skin of the fruit. Steenwijck employs a muted palette, relying on subtle shifts in tone to define form and volume. The wooden table surface provides a stable base for the objects, which are grouped to create a sense of balance. The artist's signature is visible on the lower right edge of the table.
This work belongs to the tradition of Dutch still-life painting, where artists explored the physical properties of objects through precise observation. Steenwijck was known for his ability to render different materials, from the metallic sheen of the fish to the organic decay suggested by the insects. The painting invites close inspection of these details, reflecting the technical skill expected of painters in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the man-made vessel and the natural bounty of the fish and fruit. It remains a representative example of the period's interest in domestic subjects and the careful study of light and shadow.
