A still life by Russian Impressionist Konstantin Korovin, featuring fish, bottles, and vegetables rendered in a loose, expressive style with cool tones and visible brushstrokes.
Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) was a Russian Impressionist painter, known for his contributions to stage design and his vibrant, light-filled paintings. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Korovin was associated with the Peredvizhniki movement before embracing Impressionism, and he was among the first Russian painters to adopt the style. He spent a significant portion of his life in Paris, where he was influenced by French Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir. This still life presents a collection of objects arranged on a dark surface. Two fish dominate the foreground, their silvery scales reflecting light. Behind them, two bottles add verticality to the composition, while a woven basket and a bundle of scallions and garlic provide textural contrast. The brushwork is loose and expressive, with visible strokes that capture the play of light and shadow. The palette is dominated by cool tones of grey, blue, and green, with touches of red and brown adding warmth. The overall effect is one of spontaneity and immediacy, characteristic of Impressionist painting.
