A masterful 1612 still life by Clara Peeters, featuring ornate gold vessels, a floral arrangement, and scattered coins against a dark background.
Clara Peeters was a pioneer of the still life genre in the early seventeenth century. This composition, dated 1612, demonstrates her technical precision in rendering diverse textures and light. The painting features a collection of luxury objects, including two ornate gold cups topped with small figures, a ceramic vase containing a bouquet of flowers, and a shallow bowl holding a gold chain. Scattered across the table surface are several gold coins and a selection of seashells, which add to the sense of material abundance.
Peeters employs a dark, neutral background to push the objects forward, allowing the metallic sheen of the gold and the delicate petals of the flowers to catch the light. Her approach to composition is balanced and deliberate, with each element placed to create a sense of order. The inclusion of the gold coins and the chain suggests themes of wealth and worldly possession, common motifs in the period. The artist's signature is visible on the table edge, a practice she often used to assert her identity in a male-dominated field.
This work is characteristic of the Flemish still life tradition, where the focus remains on the meticulous observation of physical reality. The contrast between the organic forms of the flowers and shells and the rigid, manufactured geometry of the metalwork creates a visual dialogue. The painting remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship expected from artists of the era, who were tasked with capturing the tactile qualities of their subjects for private collectors. The muted palette ensures that the focus remains on the interplay of light and shadow across the varied surfaces, from the smooth ceramic to the reflective gold.
