A classic still life by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, featuring game, bread, cheese, and wine. The muted tones and careful rendering of textures create a realistic and inviting scene.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic depictions of animals and hunting scenes, often commissioned by the French aristocracy. Oudry served as the director of the Beauvais and later the Gobelins tapestry manufactories, designing patterns and overseeing production. His attention to detail and ability to capture textures made him a sought-after artist during his time. This still life presents a collection of culinary items arranged on a stone ledge. A hare and a duck hang suspended against a neutral background, their forms rendered with careful attention to the fall of light and shadow. Below, a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese, and several glass flasks are placed on the ledge. The composition is arranged to create a sense of depth, with the hanging game providing a focal point. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by earth tones and muted shades, which contributes to the work's overall sense of realism.
