A still life painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry featuring a heron and other birds. The composition and lighting create a dramatic effect, typical of Oudry's approach to still life.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic animal paintings and hunting scenes, often commissioned by the French aristocracy. Oudry served as the director of the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry factories, designing patterns and overseeing production. His work combines detailed observation with a decorative sensibility, reflecting the tastes of his era. This still life presents a heron hanging upside down, its wings spread wide. The heron's plumage is rendered in shades of white and grey, contrasting with the darker tones of the background. Two smaller birds lie at the base of the composition, adding to the sense of a recent hunt. The arrangement is set against a neutral backdrop, allowing the textures and colours of the birds to take centre stage. The painting's composition and lighting create a dramatic effect, typical of Oudry's approach to still life.
