A masterwork of the Dutch Golden Age, this still life by Willem Kalf captures the interplay of light on a berkemeyer glass and citrus fruit.
Willem Kalf, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, specialised in the pronkstilleven, or ostentatious still life. This work demonstrates his technical control over light and texture. The composition centres on a berkemeyer glass, a type of drinking vessel common in the seventeenth century, which catches a singular, sharp highlight against the surrounding gloom. Beside it, a peeled lemon and oranges rest on a stone ledge. The artist renders the porous texture of the lemon peel and the reflective surface of the glass with precision.
Kalf employs a dark, monochromatic background to push the objects forward, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The light source is directional, hitting the fruit and the glass to define their forms while leaving much of the scene in shadow. This approach to chiaroscuro directs the viewer to the tactile qualities of the objects. The peeled lemon, with its spiralling rind, serves as a common motif in Kalf's work, allowing him to display his ability to paint varied surfaces, from the rough, pithy interior of the fruit to the smooth, cold glass.
Unlike the moralising vanitas paintings of his contemporaries, which often included skulls or hourglasses to suggest the transience of life, Kalf focused on the material beauty of luxury goods. His work reflects the prosperity of the Dutch Republic during this period, where trade brought exotic fruits and fine glassware into the homes of the merchant class. The painting remains a study in observation, where the arrangement of simple items becomes a vehicle for exploring light, shadow, and the physical reality of the objects themselves. The muted colour palette, dominated by browns, ochres, and deep shadows, ensures that the focus remains on the interplay of light across the surfaces.
