A still life by French artist Auguste Herbin, featuring a bowl of oranges and other fruit arranged on a table. The composition is characterised by geometric forms and bold colours.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and abstraction. Initially influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism, Herbin gradually moved towards more geometric and abstract forms. His work often features simplified shapes and bold colours, reflecting a desire to create a universal visual language. He was a founding member of the group Abstraction-Création in 1931, which promoted abstract art in France. Herbin's later work explored the possibilities of using the alphabet as a basis for abstract compositions. His theories on colour and form had a considerable impact on the development of abstract art. 'Still Life with Oranges' exemplifies Herbin's mature style, characterised by its geometric structure and simplified forms. The composition features a bowl of oranges, a bottle, and several loose fruits arranged on a tabletop. The background is composed of angular planes in shades of blue and grey, creating a sense of depth and structure. The oranges are rendered as simplified, rounded shapes, with subtle variations in colour to suggest volume. The bottle is similarly abstracted, its form reduced to a series of geometric shapes. The overall effect is one of balance and harmony, with the bold colours and simplified forms creating a visually striking image.
