A modernist still life by Danish painter Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring a simplified arrangement of a water jug, jars, and a towel in a cool, balanced palette.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm is a central figure in Danish modernism, known for his rigorous approach to the still life genre. This composition demonstrates his characteristic reduction of form, where everyday objects are distilled into their essential geometric components. The water jug, jars, and towel are arranged with a focus on volume and spatial relationship rather than decorative detail.
Lundstrøm often returned to a limited set of domestic items, using them to explore the interplay of light, shadow, and colour. The palette is restrained, relying on cool blues and earthy ochres to define the contours of the vessels. The brushwork is deliberate, creating a sense of solidity and weight that is typical of his work during the 1920s and 1930s. By stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, he directs the viewer to the structural integrity of the objects themselves.
This piece reflects the influence of French Cubism and Purism, which Lundstrøm encountered during his time in Paris. He adapted these international styles to suit his own aesthetic, which favoured clarity and balance. The towel, draped with a sense of sculptural movement, provides a contrast to the rigid, upright forms of the ceramic jars and the jug. The background is kept simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the interaction between the objects on the table surface. This work is a clear example of his method of transforming mundane household items into subjects of formal investigation.
