A still life by Natalia Goncharova, painted in a style that reflects the influence of Rayonism. The composition features a table laden with fruit, including a prominent watermelon, rendered in simplified shapes and bold colours.
Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) was a Russian avant-garde artist, painter, costume designer, writer, illustrator, and set designer. She was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group. Later, she became a central figure in the development of Russian Futurism and Rayonism. Her work synthesised diverse influences, from Russian folk art and icon painting to Cubism and Futurism. She moved to Paris in 1921, where she designed for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. This painting, titled 'Still Life with Watermelon', exemplifies Goncharova's exploration of form and colour. The composition features a table laden with fruit, including a prominent watermelon. The artist uses simplified shapes and bold colours to create a dynamic arrangement. The painting's style reflects the influence of Rayonism, an early abstract art movement developed in Russia. Rayonism focused on the depiction of light rays and reflected colour, aiming to create a sense of movement and energy. The painting's warm palette and flattened perspective contribute to its decorative quality.
