A precise Dutch still life featuring a cut glass goblet and a peeled lemon, painted with careful attention to texture and light.
Maria Margaretha van Os was a member of a prominent family of Dutch painters, and this work reflects the technical precision associated with her training. The composition features a cut glass goblet placed beside a bowl containing a partially peeled lemon. The artist employs a dark, neutral background to direct attention toward the textures of the objects. The light catches the facets of the glass, while the lemon displays a realistic rendering of its porous rind and pulpy interior.
Small details, such as the butterfly resting on a sprig of blue flowers and the fly perched near the fruit, are characteristic of the Dutch still life tradition. These elements introduce a sense of fleeting time, a common theme in European painting of this period. The surface of the table is rendered with a soft, matte finish, providing a stable base for the objects. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the yellow of the lemon, the deep blue of the small flowers, and the muted tones of the background.
Van Os demonstrates a high level of control in her brushwork, particularly in the way she captures the transparency of the glass and the organic forms of the fruit. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the subjects. This approach aligns with the nineteenth-century Dutch interest in domestic realism and the careful observation of everyday items. The painting is a clear example of the artist's ability to balance composition and detail within a small format, maintaining a sense of order and quietude throughout the scene.
