A classic Dutch Golden Age still life featuring roses, a snail, and a butterfly, rendered with the precise detail and atmospheric lighting of the late seventeenth century.
Elias van den Broeck, a Dutch painter active during the late seventeenth century, specialised in the genre of floral still life. This composition demonstrates the characteristic focus on botanical accuracy and symbolic detail common to the period. The arrangement features a central cluster of roses, ranging from fully bloomed pale pink petals to a singular, striking orange-red blossom. The foliage is rendered with careful attention to texture, showing signs of natural decay and insect activity, which were common motifs in Dutch vanitas painting to represent the fleeting nature of life.
The dark, atmospheric background provides a stark contrast to the illuminated flowers, drawing the viewer's eye to the delicate play of light across the petals. A small snail crawls along the stone ledge, while a butterfly rests nearby, adding a sense of quiet movement to the scene. Van den Broeck was a pupil of Cornelis Kick and later worked in Amsterdam, where he developed a reputation for his precise handling of light and shadow. His work often incorporated small creatures or insects, a technique that added a layer of narrative interest to the static floral display.
This print captures the fine craquelure of the original oil painting, preserving the historical character of the surface. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the flowers offset by the dark, empty space surrounding them. It is a classic example of the Dutch tradition of observing nature with scientific curiosity and aesthetic refinement. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep shadows and earthy greens, allows the subtle variations in the rose petals to emerge with clarity. This piece is suitable for those who appreciate the technical discipline and quiet observation inherent in seventeenth-century European painting.
