Description
Stourhead Folly rises above still water in warm stone and dark green, its domed roof and colonnade setting a composed pace beside the wooded lake.
Narrow windows ring the upper drum, and a triangular pediment rests over tall columns at the entrance. A curved stair sweeps down the grassy bank towards the water, where broken gold and charcoal reflections lengthen below the masonry. Mature trees close in behind the building, leaving a bright opening of cloud above the lake.
At Stourhead Folly, the walk around the water changes the building's outline with every turn. Visitors familiar with the grounds may recognise the moment when the stair, portico and reflection align across the lake, making the lakeside pause feel as important as the destination itself.
