A minimalist metalpoint drawing by Susan Schwalb, featuring precise horizontal bands that explore light, texture, and the passage of time.
Susan Schwalb is a contemporary practitioner who has revived the historical technique of metalpoint. This method involves drawing with a metal stylus on a specially prepared surface, creating marks that oxidise over time. In Strata #277, Schwalb employs this process to generate a series of horizontal bands that traverse the paper. The composition relies on the subtle variation of line weight and the reflective qualities of the metallic medium.
The work belongs to her Strata series, which explores the accumulation of time and geological formation through abstract geometry. By layering thin, precise lines, Schwalb creates a sense of depth that appears to shift depending on the angle of the light. The palette is restricted to monochromatic tones, allowing the viewer to focus on the physical texture of the marks and the rhythmic repetition of the horizontal forms. Unlike traditional drawing, which often relies on contrast to define shape, this piece uses the inherent properties of silver and other metals to suggest form through light and shadow.
Schwalb has spent decades refining her approach to this ancient medium, moving it away from its traditional use in Renaissance preparatory sketches toward a purely abstract application. The result is a quiet, meditative object that demands close observation. The precision of the lines suggests a mechanical process, yet the slight irregularities reveal the hand of the artist. This tension between the controlled application of material and the organic nature of the surface preparation defines the character of the work. It is a study in restraint, where the absence of colour and complex imagery allows the viewer to engage with the fundamental elements of line, surface, and light.
