Description
Strath of Kildonan in Highland Sutherland glows around a winding gold river, with white farmhouses and autumn woodland below purple hills as the sun settles beneath peach and mauve evening clouds.
Strath of Kildonan extends northwest from Helmsdale towards Kinbrace, carrying the River Helmsdale through inland Sutherland. It is also known as Strath Ullie. Gold discovered in 1869 drew crofters and prospectors to the valley, while the Far North railway follows the strath past Kildonan station.
A long gold river bend passes white farmhouses and dark conifers on the broad valley floor. Bare lower branches show beneath mauve and orange tree crowns, with yellow fields climbing towards open rounded hills. The low sun touches the right skyline below layered peach clouds. Warm reflections and rusty foreground shrubs suggest a clear autumn evening across the sheltered strath.
