Description
Strathaven in South Lanarkshire sets a rounded castle tower above pink flowers and green grass, with leafy trees behind the ruined walls beneath orange clouds on a warm summer evening.
Strathaven developed around a medieval castle and its supporting settlement. The town received a charter as a burgh of barony in 1450, granting market rights to William, Earl of Douglas. The stronghold was sacked and burned after the forfeiture of Douglas lands in the following decade.
Strathaven centres on a tall round stone tower joined to a roofless wall with an uneven crest. Narrow dark windows punctuate the warm grey masonry above a smooth grassy rise. Dense green trees shelter the ruins, while pink flower heads fill the lower bank. Orange clouds fading into a purple upper sky suggest a warm summer evening.
