A delicate drypoint etching by Arthur Bowen Davies, capturing a reclining female figure with fluid, minimalist lines and a quiet, introspective mood.
Stream of Silver is a drypoint etching by the American artist Arthur Bowen Davies. Known for his dreamlike, poetic approach to the human form, Davies often moved away from strict realism to capture a sense of ethereal grace. This work features a reclining female figure, rendered with minimal, fluid lines that suggest a weightless quality. The composition relies on the economy of mark-making, where the artist uses light, sweeping strokes to define the contours of the body against the negative space of the paper. Davies was a significant figure in the early twentieth-century American art scene, participating in the organisation of the 1913 Armory Show. His graphic works, such as this etching, demonstrate his interest in classical themes filtered through a modern, subjective lens. The figure is positioned in a relaxed, horizontal pose, with the head tilted downwards, creating a quiet, introspective atmosphere. The drypoint technique allows for a soft, velvety texture in the lines, particularly evident in the rendering of the hair and the subtle shading on the shoulder. This print reflects the artist's preference for elongated proportions and a sense of suspended motion. By stripping away background detail, Davies directs the viewer's attention entirely to the silhouette and the rhythmic quality of the line. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, consistent with his practice of producing limited editions of his graphic output. It remains a clear example of his ability to balance technical precision with a lyrical, almost musical sensibility in his depiction of the female nude.
