A lithograph by Pierre Bonnard capturing a Parisian street from a high vantage point, utilising steep diagonals and a muted palette.
Pierre Bonnard, a member of the Nabis group, produced this lithograph during a period when he was deeply engaged with the visual rhythms of Parisian life. The work captures a view from a high vantage point, looking down into a narrow city street. This perspective, often referred to as a bird's-eye view, reflects the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e prints on his artistic practice. The composition relies on steep diagonals to draw the eye toward the centre of the frame, where small, indistinct figures navigate the thoroughfare.
Bonnard employs a restricted palette, using muted tones to suggest the atmosphere of a grey day. The buildings are rendered with quick, gestural marks that convey the texture of stone and the density of urban architecture. Above the street, the sky is depicted with soft, rounded forms that contrast with the rigid geometry of the buildings below. The print demonstrates his ability to simplify complex visual information into a series of shapes and lines, prioritising the overall mood of the scene over precise architectural detail.
This work is part of a broader interest among artists of the late nineteenth century in the changing nature of the modern city. By removing the horizon line, Bonnard flattens the space, creating a decorative effect that emphasises the two-dimensional surface of the paper. The lithographic process allows for a subtle layering of colour, where the ink sits lightly on the surface, maintaining the spontaneity of a sketch. It is a quiet observation of daily movement, captured with economy and precision.
