A winter scene by Kobayashi Kiyochika shows a snow-covered street in the outskirts of Edo (now Tokyo). The print uses muted colours and Western perspective to capture the atmosphere of a cold winter evening in a transforming city.
Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) was a Japanese artist known for his ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. He is considered one of the last major artists of the ukiyo-e tradition. Kiyochika's work often depicted scenes of modern Tokyo during the Meiji period, blending traditional Japanese artistic techniques with Western influences. He studied with Charles Wirgman, a British cartoonist, from whom he learned Western-style drawing and perspective. This training allowed him to create images that captured the changing urban environment of Tokyo with a unique perspective. 'Street Scene in the Outskirts of Edo on an Evening in Winter' exemplifies Kiyochika's style. The print shows a snow-covered street in the outskirts of Edo (now Tokyo), with figures walking under umbrellas. The scene is rendered in muted colours, dominated by blues and greys, which evoke the cold winter evening. The composition uses Western perspective to create a sense of depth, while the subject matter remains distinctly Japanese. The figures, the architecture, and the overall atmosphere reflect the transitional period in Japanese history, as the country modernised and adapted to Western influences.
