A striking etching by Dutch artist Sipke Huismans, featuring surreal, narrative figures arranged in a three-part sequence.
Strip Moloch is an etching by the Dutch artist Sipke Huismans. The work presents a narrative sequence divided into three distinct panels, a structure reminiscent of a comic strip or a storyboard. Huismans employs a stark, monochromatic palette, utilising the deep blacks of the ink against the negative space of the paper to define his figures. The imagery is populated by surreal, anthropomorphic characters that possess a sense of unease.
In the first panel, a horned figure stands in profile, while a central, elongated character with a circular head dominates the composition. The middle section introduces a figure in a hat, accompanied by smaller, creature-like forms that appear to be observing the scene. The final panel features a large, circular shape that contains a smaller, nested figure, suggesting a sense of enclosure or entrapment. The lines are etched with a deliberate, scratchy quality, which adds to the raw, unpolished aesthetic of the print.
Huismans often explored themes of human condition, power, and social observation through his graphic work. The title, referencing Moloch, invokes historical and mythological connotations of sacrifice and authority. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, graphic arrangement that prioritises symbolic representation over anatomical accuracy. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the figures and the negative space. The work reflects the experimental printmaking practices prevalent in the mid-twentieth century, where artists sought to push the boundaries of traditional etching techniques to convey psychological states. The print remains a compelling example of Huismans' ability to distil complex narratives into a series of minimalist, evocative visual signs.
