A refined graphite study by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, capturing the classical grace and anatomical precision intended for his mural, The Golden Age.
This graphite drawing by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres serves as a preparatory study for his ambitious mural project, The Golden Age. Commissioned by the Duc de Luynes for the Château de Dampierre, the mural occupied the artist for several years during the 1840s. Ingres sought to capture an idyllic, classical vision of humanity, drawing heavily upon the aesthetic principles of Raphael and the antique tradition.
The sheet displays the characteristic precision of Ingres, who prioritised line over colour. The figures are rendered with a delicate, controlled touch, reflecting his rigorous training at the École des Beaux-Arts. The male figure, with his arm raised, and the female figure, standing in a gentle contrapposto, demonstrate the artist's focus on anatomical harmony and graceful proportion. A secondary study of a head appears in the upper centre, while faint outlines at the bottom suggest the broader compositional arrangement intended for the final mural.
Ingres was known for his obsessive attention to detail, often producing numerous sketches to refine the posture and expression of his subjects before committing them to paint. This drawing offers a view into his working process, revealing the careful construction of form through light shading and clean, continuous contours. The paper retains the original grid lines used for scaling, providing a technical insight into the transition from small-scale drawing to large-scale mural painting. The work remains a fine example of the Neoclassical dedication to clarity, balance, and the study of the human form as the primary vehicle for artistic expression.
