A series of observational graphite sketches by Aert Schouman, capturing the movement and anatomy of fighting cocks and hens.
This graphite study by Aert Schouman captures the dynamic movement of poultry in a series of quick, observational sketches. Schouman, a Dutch painter and engraver based in The Hague, maintained a keen interest in natural history and animal subjects throughout his career. His ability to render the posture and tension of birds is evident in these figures, which appear to be preparatory work for larger compositions or independent exercises in draftsmanship.
The sheet displays several distinct groupings of birds. In the lower section, a rooster stands in an aggressive, defensive stance, while hens rest nearby. The upper portion of the page contains more gestural, lighter marks that suggest birds in flight or mid-motion. Schouman employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the plumage and the sharp angles of the birds' anatomy. The composition is informal, reflecting the nature of a working artist's sketchbook where multiple ideas occupy the same space without a rigid, finished structure.
As a practitioner of the late Dutch tradition, Schouman often focused on the observation of the natural world. His work frequently bridges the gap between scientific illustration and artistic expression. This print preserves the immediacy of his pencil work, showing the initial stages of his creative process. The lack of heavy shading allows the viewer to focus on the economy of line and the artist's understanding of avian form. It is a piece that offers insight into the daily practice of an eighteenth-century draughtsman, documenting the behaviour of domestic fowl with precision and grace.
