A preparatory sketch by Frantisek Kupka for his painting "Autumn Sun", depicting three female figures beneath a fruit tree. The soft sepia tones and delicate lines reveal Kupka's exploration of form and composition.
This sketch by Frantisek Kupka (1871-1957), a Czech painter and graphic artist, is a preparatory study for his painting "Autumn Sun". Kupka is known as one of the pioneers of abstract art and Orphism, a movement that combined Cubism with Fauvist colour. He began his artistic career studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, later moving to Paris, where he was exposed to various avant-garde movements. His work bridges symbolism, Fauvism, and early abstraction. In this study, three female figures are depicted standing beneath a tree laden with fruit. The figures are rendered in a soft, sepia tone, with delicate lines defining their forms. The composition is simple, yet the figures exude a sense of classical grace. The sketch provides insight into Kupka's creative process, revealing his exploration of form and composition before arriving at the final version of "Autumn Sun". The figures are nude, and the sketch has a dreamlike quality.
