A refined ink wash painting by Unkoku Tōgan depicting the Chinese poet Su Shi, rendered with delicate brushwork and atmospheric restraint.
This work by Unkoku Tōgan depicts the celebrated Chinese poet and official Su Shi, known in Japan as So Shoku. Tōgan, a painter of the Unkoku school, was heavily influenced by the ink wash techniques of Sesshū Tōyō. This composition demonstrates the characteristic restraint and atmospheric quality associated with the ink painting traditions of the Momoyama period.
The scene features Su Shi travelling with an attendant and a donkey, a common motif in East Asian art representing the scholar-official in retirement or exile. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, while the surrounding environment is suggested through subtle washes of ink. The composition spans multiple panels, creating a sense of quiet movement across the surface. The negative space is utilised to evoke a misty, expansive atmosphere, typical of the period's aesthetic preference for simplicity and suggestion over explicit detail.
Tōgan's approach to the subject reflects the intellectual climate of the time, where the lives of historical Chinese figures were frequently referenced in Japanese art to convey themes of wisdom, resilience, and the appreciation of nature. The muted palette, dominated by varying tones of ink, focuses the viewer's attention on the posture and interaction of the figures. The rocks and bamboo in the foreground provide a grounding element, balancing the ethereal quality of the background. This print captures the technical mastery of the Unkoku school, preserving the delicate tonal transitions of the original ink work.
