A classic Mooi Indië landscape by Abdullah Suriosubroto, depicting the serene beauty of the Javanese countryside with terraced rice fields and a mountain backdrop.
Abdullah Suriosubroto is widely recognised as the first modern Indonesian painter. Trained initially as a physician in the Netherlands, he later pursued his artistic practice, becoming a central figure in the Mooi Indië (Beautiful Indies) movement. This school of painting focused on the romanticised depiction of the Indonesian archipelago, capturing the serene beauty of its natural environment and rural life.
In this work, Suriosubroto presents a view of the Javanese countryside. The composition is anchored by a large, imposing mountain that dominates the background, its form rendered in soft, atmospheric tones. Below, the scene unfolds into a series of terraced rice fields, which reflect the sky and surrounding vegetation. The foreground features a gnarled tree, its roots exposed and textured, providing a sense of scale and grounding the viewer within the space. Small, traditional dwellings are tucked away among the foliage, suggesting a quiet, agrarian existence.
The brushwork is deliberate, balancing the broad, sweeping strokes used for the mountain with more detailed applications in the foreground flora. Suriosubroto employs a palette that emphasises the greens of the vegetation and the earthy browns of the soil, contrasted against the cool, muted blues of the distant peak. The light appears soft, perhaps indicating the early morning or late afternoon, which adds a sense of stillness to the scene. This painting captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the early twentieth-century Indonesian art scene, where artists sought to document the character of their homeland through a lens influenced by European academic traditions. It remains a representative example of the artist's ability to synthesise observation with a romanticised vision of the natural world.
