A 1961 work from Jean Dubuffet's Hourloupe cycle, featuring his signature interlocking forms and restricted palette of red, blue, and black.
Successful campaign, painted by Jean Dubuffet in 1961, belongs to the artist's Hourloupe cycle. This period is defined by a specific visual language consisting of interlocking, cell-like shapes bounded by thick, dark outlines. The palette is restricted, relying heavily on red, blue, and black against a pale, off-white ground. These colours fill the irregular compartments, creating a sense of flatness that denies traditional perspective.
Dubuffet sought to bypass conventional aesthetic training, drawing inspiration from the raw, unmediated expression found in the work of children and those outside the professional art establishment. In this piece, the figures and forms appear to merge into a singular, dense mass. The composition lacks a clear centre, forcing the eye to move across the surface to track the continuous, meandering lines. The result is a chaotic yet controlled arrangement that rejects the polished finish of academic painting.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the human figure and the environment. By reducing his subjects to graphic symbols, Dubuffet creates a visual shorthand that prioritises immediate impact over representational accuracy. The thick, deliberate application of paint and the stark contrast between the outlines and the fill colours contribute to the work's raw energy. It is a characteristic example of his later career, where he moved away from the heavy, textured impasto of his earlier works toward a more graphic, linear approach. The title itself suggests a satirical take on military or social triumph, typical of the artist's often cynical view of human endeavour. This print captures the graphic clarity and the specific chromatic tension of the original oil painting, making it a distinct addition to a collection focused on mid-twentieth-century European modernism.
