Description
Sumburgh Head in Shetland carries a white lighthouse above sheer green-topped cliffs, with dark offshore rocks and narrow white wave lines against blue sea on a sunny summer day.
Sumburgh Head forms the southern tip of Shetland’s Mainland. Its steep cliffs support breeding seabirds, including puffins and guillemots. Robert Stevenson’s lighthouse was completed in 1821 and is Shetland’s oldest, linking this exposed coastal reserve with two centuries of maritime navigation.
A white lighthouse with a red lantern roof stands far along the grassy cliff edge. A winding grey road approaches across the headland, above enormous slabs of dark rock dropping to the sea. Small offshore stacks break the blue water, and thin white foam lines trace the cliff foot beneath a clear summer sky and cream-coloured clouds.
