A serene woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi depicting the Sumida River at dawn, characterised by soft atmospheric mist and a muted colour palette.
Sumida River Mist is a woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi, produced in 1926 as part of his series Twelve Scenes of Tokyo. This work captures the atmosphere of the Sumida River during the early morning hours. The composition relies on a subtle gradation of colour, known as bokashi, to render the thick, damp air that obscures the distant city skyline. The silhouettes of traditional boats with their sails are scattered across the water, providing a sense of scale and quiet activity.
In the foreground, a wooden pier extends into the frame, where a few figures wait. Their presence adds a human element to the vast, calm expanse of the river. Yoshida, who was trained in Western oil painting techniques before turning to the traditional Japanese woodblock medium, applied his knowledge of light and perspective to this print. The result is a work that balances the technical precision of the Shin-hanga movement with a soft, painterly quality. The muted palette of greys, soft blues, and pale ochres reflects the specific light conditions of a misty dawn. This print demonstrates Yoshida's ability to capture transient atmospheric effects through the rigorous process of woodblock carving and printing, where multiple blocks are used to build up the depth of the scene. The work remains a clear example of his approach to the landscape genre, where the focus is on the interplay between natural elements and the urban environment of 1920s Tokyo.
