A nineteenth-century albumen silver print by Francis Frith, depicting the steep, rocky terrain of the Furka Pass in the Swiss Alps.
This albumen silver print by Francis Frith captures the rugged topography of the Furka Pass in the Swiss Alps. Frith, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century photography, travelled extensively to document remote locations. His work often appeared in illustrated volumes, such as the one shown here, where the image sits alongside literary text. The composition focuses on the steep, rocky incline of the mountain, using the sharp diagonal of the cliff face to create a sense of scale and verticality. The contrast between the dark, textured rock and the lighter, snow-dusted slopes demonstrates the technical capabilities of the albumen process, which was favoured during this period for its ability to render fine detail.
Frith established his own firm, F. Frith & Co., which became one of the largest photographic publishers in the United Kingdom. His approach to mountain photography reflects the Victorian fascination with the sublime, where the sheer magnitude of the natural world is presented to the viewer as both awe-inspiring and formidable. The inclusion of this photograph within a book format highlights the role of photography in the mid-Victorian era as a tool for travel documentation and cultural education. By bringing the inaccessible peaks of the Alps into the domestic sphere, Frith allowed his audience to engage with distant environments from the comfort of their own homes. The print remains a clear example of early topographical photography, documenting the physical reality of the Swiss terrain before the advent of modern tourism infrastructure.
