A circular albumen silver print by Henry Stuart-Wortley, capturing a serene sunset over the waters of Eimeo in the 19th century.
This circular albumen silver print, titled Sunset at Eimeo, originates from the travelogue 'A Sketch of the Life of Archibald, Earl of Dundonald' or similar photographic documentation of the Pacific voyages undertaken by Henry Stuart-Wortley in the mid-19th century. The image captures the tranquil waters of Eimeo, now known as Moorea, during the transition of light at dusk. The composition is defined by the silhouette of palm trees and coastal vegetation, which frame the horizon where the sun descends behind clouds. The reflection of the sky and the dark foliage upon the water creates a symmetrical effect, typical of the aesthetic concerns of early travel photography.
Stuart-Wortley utilised the circular format, often referred to as a tondo, to focus the viewer's attention on the atmospheric conditions of the scene. The contrast between the bright light of the setting sun and the deep shadows of the foreground foliage demonstrates the technical capabilities of the albumen process. This medium, popular during the Victorian era, allowed for fine detail and a warm, sepia-toned finish that complements the subject matter. The print remains a record of colonial-era exploration and the European fascination with the Pacific islands. It provides a glimpse into the visual documentation methods employed by travellers who sought to capture the exoticism of distant shores for audiences back in Britain. The stillness of the water and the deliberate framing suggest a contemplative approach to the subject, moving beyond mere topographical recording to evoke a specific mood associated with the end of the day in a tropical climate.
